Thrift Store Flipping Apps: The Free Ones Are Enough to Start
Thrift store flipping apps: which free apps price and sell your finds, what eBay, Mercari, Poshmark and Facebook really take, and the hourly math.
The verdict
- Legit?Yes, but the apps only help you price and sell. Your profit depends on what you buy, and selling fees take a real cut.
- Realistic earnings:about $8 to $15 an hour in our worked example below, based on stated assumptions, before gas and taxes. Nobody can honestly promise you a fixed rate.
- Payout methods:eBay pays to a checking account or a Visa/Mastercard debit card (no PayPal). Mercari has free direct deposit or paid Instant Pay. Poshmark has direct deposit, instant debit, or PayPal/Venmo.
- Time to first cashout:on eBay, sale money usually becomes available 1 to 2 days after the buyer pays, then takes 1 to 3 business days to reach your bank. Poshmark releases money when the buyer accepts the item, or 3 days after delivery.
You can flip thrift store finds with free apps alone. The eBay app’s sold listings and camera search handle pricing, Google Lens identifies mystery items, and Facebook Marketplace, Mercari or eBay sell them. Paid scanners and crosslisting tools cost from $5 to $99 or more a month. They start to make sense once you have dozens of active listings. At five jackets a week, they don’t.
Three jobs, three kinds of app
Most “best apps” lists mix together three different jobs:
- Identify and price: the eBay app, Google Lens, Underpriced AI, and book scanners like ScoutIQ and BookScouter.
- Sell: eBay, Mercari, Poshmark, Depop, Facebook Marketplace and Etsy.
- Crosslist: Vendoo, List Perfectly and Crosslist. These post one listing to several marketplaces at once.
Many of the top-ranking lists are written by companies that sell scanning or listing tools, and they rank their own product first. Read them with that in mind.
The free setup
- eBay app (pricing). Tap the camera icon in the search bar to scan a barcode or photograph an item, then filter to sold listings. Price from what actually sold, not from asking prices. Forum users report that the sold filter sometimes doesn’t apply to image searches unless you set it first. In 2023, some users also hit a daily limit on viewing completed items. Those are user reports, not eBay policy, so if a result looks off, try a text search.
- Google Lens (identification). Use it to work out what a strange lamp or an unlabeled brand is. It won’t tell you what the item sells for, so go back to eBay sold listings for that.
- Facebook Marketplace (local selling). Local pickup sales have no selling fee, which makes it the cheapest outlet for bulky items you don’t want to ship.
- eBay or Mercari (shipped selling). eBay gives you 250 free listings a month. Mercari charges a flat 10% when an item sells.
Some paid tools have free entry points. Underpriced AI gives you one free scan, then plans start “from $5/mo”. ScoutIQ has a 14-day free trial for book scanning. Use a trial to see whether the tool finds items you would have missed. If it doesn’t, cancel before you’re charged.
What each selling app takes from a $30 sale
These are 2026 fees. The eBay and Mercari figures come from their official pages. Poshmark and Depop figures come from reputable secondary sources, because their own fee pages blocked our checks.
| App | Fee structure | Fee on a $30 item |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Marketplace (local pickup) | No selling fee | $0 |
| Depop | 3.3% + $0.45 processing, charged on item + shipping + tax | $1.44 or more |
| Mercari | 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping | $3.00 or more |
| Facebook Marketplace (shipped) | 10%, $0.80 minimum | $3.00 |
| eBay (most categories) | 13.6% + $0.40 per order over $10 | $4.48 |
| Poshmark | 20% on sales of $15 or more, $2.95 below $15 | $6.00 |
eBay rates vary by category, which matters for thrift finds. Books, movies and music pay 15.3%. Collectibles and trading cards pay 13.25%. Athletic shoes selling for $150 or more pay 8%, with no per-order fee. Jewelry and handbags pay 15% up to a cap. All of these rates are on eBay’s fee page.
Watch out for out-of-date fee numbers. Mercari still shows up as “0%”, which was only true in 2024, or as “10% + 2.9% + $0.50”. Neither is current. Mercari brought back a flat 10% fee on January 6, 2025, with no separate processing fee for sellers, according to Mercari’s fee page. Facebook’s shipped fee rose from 5% to 10% in April 2024. A widely shared “April 2026 eBay fee update” could not be confirmed, and the core US eBay fees haven’t changed this year.
What it really pays per hour
Here’s one thrift trip worked through. Every number below is our assumption except the fees:
- The trip takes 3 hours, including the drive. You buy 6 items at $5 each, so you spend $30.
- Photographing and listing takes 15 minutes per item, so 1.5 hours.
- 4 of the 6 items sell at $30 each. The other two don’t sell, and you still paid for them.
- You offer free shipping and pay about $8 per label. Packing each sold item takes 15 minutes.
Selling on Mercari:
- Sales: 4 × $30 = $120
- Fees: 4 × $3 = $12
- Shipping: 4 × $8 = $32
- Inventory: $30
- Profit: $120 in sales, minus $12 in fees, $32 in shipping and $30 in stock = $46
- Time: 3 + 1.5 + 1 = 5.5 hours
- About $8.36 an hour, before gas and taxes.
Selling the same items locally on Facebook Marketplace:
- No fees and no shipping, so profit is $120 minus $30 = $90.
- We assume each meetup takes 20 minutes, which adds about 1.33 hours, for a total of about 5.83 hours.
- About $15.43 an hour, assuming every buyer turns up. Plenty don’t.
Fees cost you less than time and unsold stock do. A trip where nothing sells drags your average down for the whole month.
Paid crosslisters: when the subscription earns its keep
- Vendoo: $14.99, $29.99 or $59.99 a month (less if you pay yearly), unlimited items, 14-day free trial.
- List Perfectly: $29 to $69 a month, with a Pro Plus plan from $99. It has a money-back guarantee covering your first 100 listings.
- Crosslist: $29.99 for 200 new listings a month, up to $44.99 for unlimited. Money-back guarantee within 3 days or 20 listings.
Crosslisting puts one item in front of buyers on several marketplaces at once, so it can sell faster. With a handful of items, copying listings by hand does the same job for free. Before you subscribe, count your active listings and work out whether the faster sales would cover the monthly fee.
Getting paid: costs and timing
- eBay: payouts are daily by default, or you can choose weekly or monthly. Express payout costs $2.00. Savings accounts and PayPal are not accepted.
- Mercari: direct deposit is free, but each failed deposit costs $2. Instant Pay costs $3 per cash-out, limited to one a day and $600 a month.
- Poshmark: direct deposit is free and takes 2 to 3 business days. Instant debit costs $2, and PayPal or Venmo costs $0.35 (secondary source).
Hidden costs and account risks
- Reused boxes: since July 12, 2026, USPS charges $50 for packages with incorrect hazmat labels, and old labels on reused boxes are the usual cause. On Poshmark, sellers pay $5 of that fee from August 1, 2026. Peel off or cover old labels.
- eBay account standing: from July 1, 2026, if your account is rated Below Standard for four or more months in a row, you pay an extra 7% on final value fees until you reach Above Standard.
- eBay category limits: since July 13, 2026, some higher-value categories require more account standing and selling history before you can list in them.
- International buyers on eBay: an extra 1.65% fee.
- Mercari cancellations: if you cancel often, you can be charged 5% of the item price, up to $25.
- Poshmark returns: buyers have 72 hours after delivery to open a case.
Recalls and scams
Reselling recalled products is illegal. The CPSC states that “it is unlawful to offer recalled products for sale,” and that applies to secondhand and online resellers too. Check cpsc.gov/recalls before you list anything for kids, any appliance, or anything with a motor.
Scammers target sellers as well as buyers. The FTC warns about fake payment notices, checks written for more than the price with a request to refund the difference, and requests for a Google Voice verification code. Never share a code, never deposit an overpayment, and keep payment inside the app.
Taxes
This is general information, not tax advice. For your own situation, talk to a tax professional.
- Federal 1099-K: platforms only have to file one if you receive more than $20,000 and have more than 200 transactions in a year, according to the IRS.
- State forms: according to Stripe’s filing table, some states use much lower thresholds. It’s $600 in DC, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Vermont and Virginia, $1,000 in New Jersey, $1,000 plus 4 transactions in Illinois, and $2,500 in Arkansas. Stripe notes some of these may still change.
- You must report the income whether or not you get a form.
- Buying items to resell makes you a sole proprietor, so you report on Schedule C. If your net earnings are $400 or more, you also owe 15.3% self-employment tax.
- Selling your own used belongings is treated differently. If an item sells for less than you paid, you can zero out the income. If it sells for more, the profit is taxable. Both cases are explained on this IRS page.
FAQ
Do I need a paid scanner app to start? No. The eBay app’s sold listings plus Google Lens cover pricing and identification. Try a paid scanner on a free trial only once you’re sourcing regularly.
Which app keeps the most of each sale? Facebook Marketplace for local pickup, since there’s no selling fee. For shipped items, Depop’s processing fee is the lowest in the table above, and Poshmark’s 20% is the highest.
Can I flip if I’m under 18? Not on eBay, which requires you to be 18. Mercari requires 18 or the age of majority in your state. Poshmark’s terms set a minimum age of 13. If selling apps are off the table for now, our guide to survey apps for students covers options with fewer barriers.
Will I get a tax form? Federally, only above $20,000 and 200 transactions. Some states send one at $600. Either way, you still have to report what you earn.
Use it if, skip it if
Use it if
- You already enjoy thrifting and can spot brands or collectibles fast.
- You have space to store stock, and time each week to list and ship.
- You’ll check eBay sold listings before you pay for anything.
Skip it if
- You need a predictable hourly rate. Unsold items and buyers who don’t show up make flipping erratic, and online tutoring pays more steadily for your time.
- You’re tempted to pay for a crosslister before you’ve made your first few sales.
- You won’t keep records for taxes or check items against recall lists.
